A French magazine makes sports history- 07/22/1894- The first car competition takes place. This was not a race but a 90-mi reliability drive from Paris to Rouen. The unofficial winner of the competition was Count Jules-Albert de Dion.
Nigel Mansell, UK top race driver wins the World Grand Prix Formula One championship. at his greatest season (which made some F1 records) Mansell won 9 of the 16 races in his Williams-Renault FW14B race car.
05.30.1911- The racecar driver, Ray Harroun, wins the first Indy 500 ever held. he sets the record by reaching a average speed of 74.602 mph.Harroun’s Firestone-shod yellow Marmon got the name – “Wasp”.
