Kirani is the first world championship medalist from Grenada, which is a small country with a population of just over 100,000. his athletic talent was discovered when he was a child. Kirani made the fastest time in 400m run ever made by a 14-year-old and by a 15-year-old.

In 2010 Kirani was recruited by University of Alabama and won the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championship titles.
